The San Francisco Paintings of Lawrence Kushner

Larry Kushner, a dedicated San Francisco painter with over thirteen years of experience, has worked closely with Bay Area luminaries like Ezra Katz, Sandy Ostrau, and Verakeet Tongpaiboon. An ordained rabbi, Kushner has authored over a dozen books on spirituality and Kabbalah and currently serves as the Scholar-in-Residence at Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco. Notably, the oil paintings of Lawrence Kushner focus on capturing extraordinary beauty within ordinary scenes, bringing patterns of light to evoke a deeply spiritual experience.

“I am primarily interested in calling attention to the extraordinary, even dazzling, beauty sealed in ‘ordinary’ places. I try not to name the things I see but to focus instead on portraying patterns of light. For me, the experience of light and beauty is a primal spiritual event.”
