URBAN EDGE Artist:
Dilcia Giron
Dilcia Giron is inspired by the ever changing landscape of the San Francisco which seems to be in the constant process of gentrification.
BIO
I was born and raised in El Salvador, grew up in place that was over saturated with visual stimulation. My perspective of reality was constantly changing. Surprises and unexpected events were part of my everyday life. Is probably the reason why I find it hard to limit myself to one particular art style, and prefer to express in many different ways. My artistic repertoire includes printmaking, photography, mixed media, collage, digital illustrations, performance and collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media. I create constantly, with whatever is available to me at the moment. From taking photos, to drawing, collaging or painting. I am constantly playing, exploring new patterns, new shapes, new techniques, new perspectives etc. I use the process of “Art making” as the means to explore purity and freedom.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My piece is a social criticism to the issue of “Gentrification”. Inspired by the ever changing landscape of the city, which is in the constant process of gentrification, transforming low income communities into wealthy neighborhoods. Causing the displacement of longtime residents and small business owners. I wanted to illustrate the urban environment of our city, a mixed of high end housing and buildings, and poverty and homelessness.
