Shop John Lindsey

John Lindsey has a deep appreciation for images and ideas that explore the intersection of society and nature, specifically where water and land meet. This series highlights San Francisco’s 1939 Aquatic Park WPA project. A time when the government was creating equality.

BIO

I have lived in San Francisco for thirty years, originally coming here to go to cooking school. I worked in the restaurant profession for many years. I took a job at the San Francisco Art Institute cafe and subsequently started taking classes. This was the start of feeding peoples eyes rather than their stomachs.

I currently live with my wife, Kristin and two children Jasper (15) and Molly (13) in the Western Edition. Kristin teaches at Lowell Alternative High School. I operate a small graphic design consultancy and The Great Highway Gallery in the Outer Sunset where I have been a part of the beach community for 30 years.

I focus on my deep appreciation for images and ideas that explore the intersection of society and nature, specifically where water and land meet. My work is mixed media, photography, photomontage, video and sculpture.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The speaker towers at Aquatic Park where built in 1939 and are approximately 35 feet high. Their original purpose was to broadcast the sporting events at the park.

The towers where built by the Works Progress/Projects Administration WPA. Designed to be the city’s first recreational connection to the bay front. The WPA was part of the New Deal putting people back to work after the great depression. A time when the government was creating equality as opposed to divides.
