NOW – June 8, 2019

Artist’s Talk Saturday, June 8 2:30pm. TICKETS

The artwork of Inez Storer invites the viewer in through inventive and colorful combinations of imagery with layers of richly textured paint and mixed media. The underlying stories are often infused with personal experiences that are also relevant to the times that we live in. These allegorical messages are at once playful and profound.

“The recent work has a common thread weaving through it…a double-meaning…an appropriate commentary to our current state of affairs. Imagine ‘tripping over a wire’ but somehow managing at the last minute not to fall down! That is HOPE and SURVIVAL!”

-Inez Storer

“She is still going strong … with a full show of brand new work focused on our current state of affairs ? we may trip but we won’t fall ?” @alanbamberger

Visual Art Source Recommendation

by DeWitt Cheng

Inez Storer’s new exhibition, “Trip-Wire,” features thirty mixed-media paintings that allude to our crisis-riddled times while still succeeding as satisfying aesthetic objects that portray dream-like, non-narrative states of consciousness. A trip-wire is, of course, the trigger to set off a bomb or trap. Storer uses the term in a slightly different sense: as an obstacle that makes us stumble (trip), but not to the point of falling: ”That is HOPE and SURVIVAL!” We should be so lucky in real life.

The paintings are, despite the obstacles the artist places in their way during the creative process, a spontaneous deep dive into materials and intuition, with each work a journey without a planned destination. Their protagonists are in a sense surrogates for the artist, whose life story contains a number of dramatic journeys and surprises. Storer: “The figures have a tendency to be slightly off balance, or passing from one reality to another … There is oftentimes an attempt at an unrealized form of danger, close, in fact, to the real world. … an emotional, sometimes physical precariousness.” Also: “My figures often float in precarious positions like tightrope walkers, reflect[ing] our own sometimes unsettled lives.”

Storer considers herself “a visual raconteur,” but the tales she weaves through free association are as much generated in the mind of the observer-collaborator as inscribed and fixed in paint and collage. They’re fluid and dreamlike, partly scrapbook or child’s toy. The box assemblages “Salute” and “Cinema” inevitably recall Joseph Cornell — and partly the inner movie screen world of nostalgia and reverie. Don’t miss “Painting with Matisse,” a luxuriant homage to color and pattern; “A Voyage to Remember,” with its ocean liner a metaphor for life’s passage; “Saving Lotusland,” perhaps a reminiscence of Storer’s Hollywood childhood, as well a plea for the imagination. These paintings may often be thematically timeless, but they are also all too timely.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work usually has an aspect of implied history, both through the use of the figure as well as objects that are a part of my “home” collections. The figures have a tendency to be slightly off balance, or passing from one reality to another. The absurd is of great interest, usually through the use of unconscious motivations. The figures can fill the landscape, either in a psychic way or in ways that are above gravity-pulled orientations. In using an imagined format of the surreal, I am able to work a more unreal world of fantasy. It does always seem to fantasy to me. There is oftentimes an attempt at an unrealized form of danger, close, in fact, to the real world…an emotional, sometimes physical precariousness. It seems to be a way of seeking clarity and identity through a parallel of sense of isolation. After all, I work alone in my studio almost every day. I usually start my work by marking the surface of the painting, adding more and more, then peeling away the surface to the first marks. It seems a metaphor of one’s own life, as the future becomes enmeshed with the past. Most of the time I enter my studio with an agenda, but then something happens, and I let the painting take me on its own journey. To be surprised while painting is the real experience, the reason to keep on doing the work. I have objects, bits and pieces, images cut from a myriad of sources and whatever I can collect that inform my work, or sometimes I actually attach materials of some kind to the surface of the painting. It is a way of going shopping every time I am in the studio. And artists love to shop in whatever form that activity can take. We are all like blotters. I am a blotter, absorbing all the different aspects of what I experience. Painting is evolutionary, and a grand experience.
